The dynamics of cities and the complexity of the problems that arise along with the movement of change have always been a fascinating topic for researchers from various disciplines. The complexity of issues in a city's development involves various interrelated variables, such as social systems, spatial structures, and ecological conditions. A city is imagined not simply as a passive natural entity, but as a social entity constantly changing through the dynamics of institutions and social relations.
The book "Sociologizing Urban Space" examines urban dynamics, spatial dialectics, and social reproduction in relation to the centers of ethnic organizations in Makassar City. The emphasis is on changes in social space and the intersection between the poles of spatial meaning and the process of social production. The city in this study is imagined as a given space endowed with meaning in such a way that its changes are constructed through social processes. The desire to study space and place in relation to the process of social production represents another dimension of modern sociology, which has traditionally focused more on time as a dynamic field of social change. Thus, this book addresses Foucault's anxiety and longing for the importance of writing a comprehensive history of space through historical sociological studies.
This book covers: spatial conceptions and theories of the city; elements that shape the spatial structure of Makassar; the direction of change in social spaces; historical, geographical, demographic, and organizational agglomeration sketches; the history of ethnic groups in Makassar; ethnic-based organizational spaces; changes in patterns of reproduction and social reproduction; the face of space in new social visions; and the intersection between the poles of spatial meaning and the processes of social production.
