Understanding coastal communities, both conceptually and theoretically, and within the context of their daily lives, is an important scientific endeavor among a variety of sociological issues. Historically, these communities are social entities whose characteristics are a legacy of the past, reflecting the diverse spirit of the times. In this context, coastal communities (fishermen and other professions) are imagined as more open-minded than those living inland. Culturally, coastal communities also possess a rich heritage of traditions, both rituals and ecological wisdom, designed to maintain a harmonious relationship between humans and nature. Each coastal community even has its own religious system, shaped by their perspectives on themselves and their environment.
Economically, coastal communities are consistently (with many exceptions) identified with dire conditions, such as poverty and underdevelopment. Therefore, development policy targets, among other things, are often directed at coastal communities, often with various labels attached to them. For example, government programs specifically for coastal areas and communities are implemented in the form of empowerment and social assistance. Despite this, various government programs aimed at improving the welfare of coastal communities have, in many cases, failed to change their socio-economic conditions.
Socially, coastal communities have unique dynamics of interactions and relationships. Social ties manifest not only in kinship but also in social and economic patterns such as patron-client relationships. This reality characterizes social relations in coastal communities, particularly among fishermen, where the patron, the owner of capital, acts and is considered the "guarantor" for the community's survival, especially those whose economic conditions are less stable. Unlike other communities, the development of coastal communities is marked by the emergence of various complex problems that require academic analytical intervention.
