Public space, also known as "offentlichkeits," is etymologically equivalent to the words "publicite" (French) and "publicity" (English). Conceptually, public space in this study can be interpreted from two perspectives: (1) physically (spatially), meaning a public open space where everyone has the right to use it for various activities; (2) functionally, meaning space interpreted from a social context beyond its mere physical appearance or its emphasis on the space's role as a platform that facilitates interaction and communication between people.

Generally, public space is an open space capable of accommodating the need for open-air meeting places and shared activities. This space allows for meetings between people to interact with each other. Because these spaces often occur in various shared activities, these open spaces are categorized as public spaces.

In relation to urban planning, public space is open space, such as streets, parks and recreational areas, town squares, sidewalks, markets, squares, plazas, waterfronts, and others. Public spaces are a vital necessity for urban communities. As a means of conducting various activities, urban public spaces must be easily accessible. Furthermore, the cultural and natural aspects of public spaces must be considered amidst the hustle and bustle of the city and its activities, thus providing a calming experience for those who enjoy these public spaces.
